Dolby Atmos® is the latest innovation in spatial audio technology that has reinvented how sound is experienced. It furthers surround sound by enveloping you with the most realistic interpretation of how our ears perceive sound in the real world. The unparalleled clarity and fidelity allow you to hear and feel more. Dolby Atmos is the next step in creating a truly immersive audio experience for cinema, home entertainment, music, gaming and more.
There are only a handful of studios in the Midwest equipped to master in Dolby Atmos, and Trilix Studio is currently the only one in Iowa.
How does it work?
Dolby Atmos is an advanced object-based surround sound technology. It treats each sound as a distinct object that can be precisely placed and moved in three-dimensional space. This approach allows sound designers to create a more immersive audio environment by strategically positioning sounds anywhere around the listener, including above, enhancing the sense of being in the middle of the action.
Traditional surround sound systems, such as the 5.1 setup, use a fixed number of speakers to create a surround sound field. However, these systems primarily focus on horizontal sound distribution, with limited ability to convey height or vertical movement. Dolby Atmos overcomes these limitations by incorporating height channels. This enables sounds to not only move around the listener but also ascend or descend, providing a truly three-dimensional auditory experience.
Dolby Atmos is remarkably flexible and adaptable. It was designed to deliver an enhanced listening experience across various devices and setups, from simple headphones to elaborate home theater configurations and even expansive Atmos-equipped IMAX theaters. The technology optimizes the audio playback based on the available speaker setup or headphones. This preserves the spatial effects and immersive quality of the soundtrack as much as possible, regardless of the listening environment.
Dolby Atmos is also compatible with existing audio formats, meaning that Atmos content can be enjoyed on both Atmos and non-Atmos systems. On systems without Atmos capability, the audio will be adapted to fit the available speaker setup. This ensures listeners can still enjoy a high-quality audio experience, even if some of the immersive aspects of Atmos are not fully realized.
